Blocked radiators and a failed chemical flush: what to do next

A radiator that stays cold after a chemical flush usually hasn't been cleaned — it's still blocked. Here's why that happens and what your realistic options are.

A radiator that stays cold at the bottom, takes hours to warm up, or never gets hot at all is usually blocked. Over the years, the steel inside radiators corrodes and sheds black iron oxide sludge (magnetite). It settles in the bottom of radiators and packs into pipework, especially narrow microbore pipe, until hot water can no longer get through.

Why a chemical flush often fails

A chemical flush or standard power flush relies on cleaning chemicals and water flow to loosen sludge and carry it out. That works on light contamination. It struggles with the problems that cause the worst heating faults:

  • Compacted sludge. Old deposits set hard, and chemicals circulating for a few hours won't break them down.
  • Fully blocked pipes. If water can't flow through a pipe, the chemical can't reach the blockage.
  • Microbore pipework. With 8mm and 10mm pipes there is little flow to work with, and they block solid easily.

The result is familiar: the water runs clear, the invoice is paid, and the same radiators are still cold. Many homeowners are then told the only option is new radiators or new pipework.

How PowDer Flush can help

PowDer Flush was developed for the systems where conventional flushing has already failed. It uses a patented method designed to clear hard, compacted blockages in radiators and pipework, rather than relying on chemicals alone.

That makes it suited to:

  • Radiators still cold after a chemical or power flush
  • Blocked microbore and plastic pipework
  • Older systems that have been written off as needing replacement

The system is tested before and after the flush, so you can see the difference in how each radiator performs. In many cases the heating is restored in a day, with no pipes or radiators replaced.

Before you replace anything

If you've had a flush and your radiators are still cold, the blockage is probably still there. Speak to PowDer Flush before paying for new pipework.
